In his book "A Study of History," Arnold J. Toynbee (1889-1975) an English philospher of history, resents "The Challenge and Response theory". This hyphothesis explains why and how civilizations thorough history have grown and vanished. This hypothesis holds for 26 civilizations that have emerged throughout human history. It is applicable tomore tha civilizations.

Faced with English tax demands, the American colonies responded with "no taxation without representation", and declared independence. From then on, we have history of the United States. The Iraq War (2003-2011) was the decision made by U.S. President George W. Bush, in response to the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers, in New York.

Applying this hypothesis to business, Morris Chang (born 1931) was recruited by Taiwan in 1985 to be president of its Industrial Technology Research Institute. His response to this challenge was to use his expertise in semi-conductors and founded Taiwan Semi-conductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the first foundry to manyufactur chips designed by its customers.
